Met Eireann placed Ireland on yellow alert for snow and ice, with sleet, snow and strong winds set to cause travel chaos. Met Eireann’s, Gerry Murphy said: “The air over us is very cold at the moment, then we have a weather system pushing up from the south, and once that meets that very, very cold air, it is going to fall as rain, sleet and snow. Abbeyfeale on the Kerry-Limerick border was the coldest place in the country so far this week as it hit -6.5C. A weather advisory for Ireland remains in place as cold Arctic air brings difficult conditions this week.
Sharp to severe frosts are expected with icy stretches on roads and pavements. There may be sleet and snow, mostly in the north and on the hills, the national forecaster said.
Driving in snowy and cold weather can be a challenging task. While it is important to travel to your destination, be it for work, school or pleasure, it is also important to ensure you consider your safety and that of other road users. The following tips will help you drive safely in snowy and cold weather.
- Prepare your car: Ensure your car is ready for the cold weather by checking the battery, brakes, and tires. Check that your battery is fully charged and replace it if necessary. Ensure your brakes are functioning correctly, and the brake pads are in good condition. Make sure your tires are inflated to the recommended pressure and have enough tread for good traction. You may also consider using winter tires, specifically designed for driving in snow and ice, if the cold weather persists.
- Slow down: Driving in snow and ice requires slower speeds, so slow down and drive at a safe speed. Reduce your speed when driving on icy roads, as your vehicle will require more time to stop, and sudden movements can cause your vehicle to lose control.
- Keep a safe distance: Maintain a safe distance between your car and the car in front of you. This distance should be increased during snowy weather to account for the reduced visibility and slippery roads.
- Use headlights: Make sure your headlights are turned on, and your taillights are functioning correctly. This will help other drivers see you in the snow and reduced visibility.
- Be aware of black ice: Black ice is a thin layer of ice on the road that can be hard to see. Drive cautiously and be aware of shaded areas, bridges, and overpasses, as they are more likely to have black ice.
- Don't use cruise control: Cruise control should not be used in snow and icy conditions, as it can cause your vehicle to lose traction and control.
- Avoid sudden movements: Avoid sudden braking, accelerating, and turning, as it can cause your vehicle to lose control. Gradual and smooth movements will help you maintain control of your vehicle.
- Stay informed: Before traveling in snowy and cold weather, check the weather forecast, and plan your journey accordingly. Be aware of any traffic updates, road closures, or warnings. Tune in to the national radio stations who are providing regular weather updates. Visit Met Eireann to get the latest weather information.
- Carry an emergency kit: It is always a good idea to carry an emergency kit in your car during the winter months. This kit should include a shovel, ice scraper, flashlight, warm clothing, blankets, and a fully charged mobile phone.
Driving in snowy and cold weather requires caution and preparation. By following the above tips, you can ensure your safety and that of other road users. Always remember to drive at a safe speed, keep a safe distance, and be aware of black ice. Stay informed and be prepared for emergencies by carrying an emergency kit in your car. Safe travels!
