Drive Slow in the Snow – Status Yellow Low Temperature and Ice Warning

At Dolmen Insurance, our car insurance team knows how quickly winter weather can turn an ordinary journey into a stressful one. Therefore, with Met Éireann issuing a Status Yellow ice and low temperature warning, we want to help you stay safe on the roads. By sharing clear advice and practical tips, we aim to reduce risk and give you confidence, even when conditions deteriorate. Above all, your safety remains our top priority during this cold snap.

Weather Warning Overview

Met Éireann has issued its first Status Yellow warning for 2026 across Munster, Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, and Wicklow. As a result, sharp and severe frost will develop, while icy stretches will form quickly. Furthermore, sleet and snow may fall in northern areas and on higher ground, which will add to the danger on already cold roads.

The warning runs from 18:00 on Saturday 03/01 until 11:00 on Sunday 04/01. During this time, hazardous travel conditions are likely. In addition, strong winds may combine with showers, which will reduce visibility and make journeys far more stressful.

Increased Risk of Black Ice

Met Éireann meteorologist Gerry Murphy has warned of a greater threat of ice on the roads. He explained that black ice may form in places where showers occur, “Because much of the country will be dry, the ice won’t be that lethal in places but places where there are showers, you could see black ice in places and also where there is sleet and snow”. However, where sleet or snow falls, sudden icy patches may catch drivers off guard. Therefore, everyone should slow down and take great care, especially on untreated roads.

Why This Weekend Is Critical

This cold spell coincides with the reopening of schools and workplaces. Consequently, traffic levels will increase at the same time that road grip decreases. For this reason, even short trips can become hazardous. Moreover, shaded roads, rural lanes, bridges, and overpasses will freeze first, so familiar routes may feel very different.

Prepare Your Vehicle for Winter Conditions

Preparing your car now will reduce stress later. Firstly, check your battery, as cold weather drains power quickly. Secondly, inspect your brakes to ensure they respond correctly. Thirdly, check your tyres for tread depth and correct pressure. In addition, winter tyres can offer far better traction if the cold persists. Finally, top up your washer fluid with a winter-grade solution to keep your windscreen clear.

Adapt Your Driving Style

Once on the road, adjust your driving style straight away. Slow speeds allow you to react sooner. At the same time, leave much larger gaps between vehicles, because stopping distances increase on ice. Also, turn on your headlights in poor visibility so other drivers can see you clearly. Moreover, avoid using cruise control, as it reduces your ability to react quickly on slippery surfaces. Above all, keep every movement smooth and gentle.

Gerry Murphys advice is something everyone should heed “Overall a slow down great care to be taken on the roads, especially on untreated roads.”

Watch for Hidden Dangers

Black ice often looks like wet tarmac, yet it offers almost no grip. Therefore, approach shaded bends, hills, bridges, and overpasses with caution. These areas freeze faster than open roads, especially overnight and early in the morning.

Stay Informed Before You Travel

Before travelling, stay informed. Check the latest forecasts on Met Éireann and listen to national radio for traffic updates. By doing so, you can plan safer routes and avoid known trouble spots.

Carry an Emergency Kit

It is always a good idea to carry an emergency kit in your car during the winter months. This kit should include:

  • Ice scraper and shovel
  • Torch and spare batteries
  • Warm clothing and blankets
  • Fully charged mobile phone

These items help you stay safe if delays occur.

Driving in snowy and icy conditions requires patience, planning, and constant awareness. However, when you slow down, prepare properly, and stay informed, you greatly reduce your risk.
